Step

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. On some models of the A4, you must remove the air ducts to be able to reach the alternator. If your car is one of those, you can remove the clamps with a screwdriver and pull the air ducts off.
2. Disconnect the wires from the alternator using a wrench to remove the nuts. Unplug the wiring harness from the alternator.
3. Loosen the mounting bolts on the alternator with a ratchet and socket. Push the alternator to the side and remove the serpentine belt from the alternator. Loosen the alternator using a socket and ratchet and pull the alternator from the car.
4. Place the new alternator on the engine and install the mounting bolts loosely. Put the serpentine belt back on the alternator pulley and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Plug the wiring harness into the alternator and connect the other electrical wires. Tighten the nuts with a wrench.
5. If you removed the air ducts in Step 1, put them back on and tighten the clamps with the screwdriver. Connect the battery terminal and tighten the nut with a wrench.
