Repair Review Car

1. Press the Menu button repeatedly until you see the Settings display. From the settings menu, you have the choice to revert to all the factory settings, or to choose from a sub-menu and reset the individual functions for the Mercedes Benz SL.
2. Select Reset if you want to adjust all the functions, including the navigation system, to factory settings. Factory settings are the defaults set up by the manufacturer. Hold the button for about three seconds. If you want to reset just the navigation system, go to Step 4.
3. Press the Reset button again to confirm the request. This will reset all the sub-menu functions.
4. Press the up or down arrow to select a function from the sub-menu.
5. Select the Nav menu to select from the navigation settings.
6. Click Reset twice to reset the navigation system.

1. Remove the front grill, which is held on with two screws at the top. Remove the outside temperature sensor by squeezing the prongs and pulling.
2. Unbolt the front support located behind the grill. There are four 10-mm bolts, three 8-mm bolts and two screws at the bottom. Remove the clips from the hood-release cable and push them to the front of the car.
3. Remove the secondary radiator. Its held on with two 10-mm bolts at the bottom. Remove the two hoses, and let the coolant drain into a pan.
4. Loosen the 13-mm bolt that holds the alternator to the block. Use a 13-mm wrench on the alternator bracket, turning clockwise to loosen the belt.
5. Remove the compressor belt for the A/C with a 14-mm wrench on the bottom and a 15-mm wrench on the top. Remove the power steering pump belt with a 15-mm wrench and a 13-mm wrench behind the pulley.
6. Remove the bracket shaped like an upside down L from the passenger side of the block with a 17-mm wrench.
7. Remove the plastic cover for the belts that is attached to the block and held on with 6-mm Allen bolts.
8. Remove the crank pulley. First remove the four 6-mm Allen bolts from the pulley and then the center bolt with a 27-mm socket. Put the car in fifth gear to keep the motor from turning.
9. Remove the metal cover located in front of the timing belt, held on with two 5-mm Allen bolts.
10. Put the crank bolt back in and with the car in neutral, turn the motor with a socket on the end of the crankshaft bolt until the small dot on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the arrow on the valve cover. Mark the dot and arrow with a marker or paint.
11. To make sure the motor is at top dead center (TDC), remove the first spark plug and use a long screwdriver to make sure the piston is at the top of its travel.
12. Remove the camshaft gear with the timing belt still on and car in fifth gear to keep the motor from turning. Remove the camshaft gear and timing belt. Put car back in neutral after it is loosened.
13. There is an inner metal plate that needs to be removed with a 10-mm and 13-mm socket. There are three bolts on the front, one on the passenger side and on for the water pump.
14. Remove the remaining 6-mm Allen bolt for the water pump and remove the pump.
15. Put a new seal for the water pump and reinstall the water pump (or install a new one); install in the reverse of removal.
16. Reinstall the camshaft gear, aligning it with the timing marks. Make sure the crankshaft is also still aligned with the arrow on the valve cover.
17. Once everything is aligned, install the new timing belt and rotate the water pump to set the timing belt tension. You should be able to just twist the belt to 90-degrees with your fingers.
18. Reinstall everything in the reverse of removal. Bleed and top up coolant system.

1. Park the Audi on a flat surface and put the parking brake on. If you will be replacing the front rotors first, place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. If youre replacing the rear rotors first, place wheel chocks behind the front wheels.
2. Slide the floor jack under a solid part of the car frame on the end of the car that youll be working on first. Carefully pump the jack and raise the car until its high enough to slide jack stands underneath.
3. Slide two jack stands under the car on opposite sides of the end youre working on. Make sure theyre positioned under solid parts of the frame. With the stands in place, carefully lower the jack until the car is resting on the stands, then pull the jack out.
4. Approach the first wheel you want to work on and use the tire iron to remove all of the wheel lug nuts. When the lug nuts are off, pull the tire toward you to remove the entire tire and wheel assembly.
5. Study the caliper and brake pad assembly clamped to the rotor, and if you have a service manual for your car, open it up to a diagram of this assembly. The goal is to determine exactly how the caliper assembly is held together. On many Audis, there is a thin wire clip that surrounds the entire caliper assembly, but this may not be present. You should also see one or two bolts holding the caliper itself in place, and another series of bolts holding the caliper mount against the rotor.
6. Remove the wire clip, if applicable, using a pair of pliers.
7. Use a hex socket wrench or screwdriver, depending on your caliper bolt style, to remove the bolt or bolts holding the outside of the caliper against the caliper mount. When you do this, the caliper will come loose. Make sure you support the caliper and do not allow it to dangle from the brake line.
8. Attach the caliper to the underside of the frame using twist ties so that it will not dangle from the brake line. Allowing the caliper to dangle may damage the brake line, which is very dangerous.
9. Pull the two brake pads, which should now be exposed, out of the brake caliper mount.
10. Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper mount onto the rotor. This will require either a hex socket wrench or a screwdriver, depending on the bolt design. Pull the mount off of the rotor when the bolts have been removed.
11. Slide the old rotor off the wheel spindle.
12. Slide the new rotor onto the wheel spindle.
13. Put the brake caliper mount back on the rotor in the same position it was installed on the older one. Insert the bolts and tighten them all back down.
14. Slide the brake pads back into place in the caliper mount.
15. Take the twist ties off of the brake caliper and place it on top of the caliper mount. Replace the bolts holding the caliper together and tighten them down.
16. Slide the tire and wheel assembly back onto the wheel spindle and tighten down all of the lug nuts.
17. Repeat steps four through sixteen on the other wheel on the same end of the car.
18. Slide the floor jack back under the frame and pump it up so that the car rises and inch or so above the jack stands. Remove the jack stands, then slowly lower the car off the jack.
19. Repeat this entire process on the opposite end of the car.

Instructions
1. Get inside the Mercedes Kompressor C180, fasten your seat-belt and put the key into the ignition.
2. Ensure that the transmission of the Mercedes C180 is in the neutral position and that either the hand or foot brake are being applied.
3. Twist the ignition key and start the car.
4. Hold the Mercedes C180 in neutral momentarily until engine speed has steadied, the car is operating normally and has started to warm up for better performance.
5. Shift the Mercedes C180 into either first gear or reverse with the shift stick and with the clutch pressed in fully with your foot, but with a brake still being applied.
6. Remove any C180 braking while slowly easing off the C180 clutch and applying a little gas with the accelerator. Ease down the street in the direction you need to go.

Manual Soft Top Operation
1. Turn your Audi TTs engine off if your soft top is only manually installable.
2. Push in the soft top release storage buttons on either side of the vehicle. Pull the soft top up and release its front strap.
3. Lift the entire soft top out of the storage container and fit it over the vehicles cockpit until it connects to the windshield frame.
4. Go inside the Audi TT, press the large button on the ceiling and grab the soft top handle. Turn the handle counterclockwise and pull down on the soft top. Turn the handle clockwise while holding the soft top to the windshield frame.
Power Controlled Soft Top Operation
5. Turn your Audi TTs engine on and pull up on the emergency brake to engage it.
6. Push the soft top control button next to the emergency brake and hold it in. The soft top will emerge from the storage well in the rear of the vehicle.
7. Release the button when the soft top is no longer moving forward. Press the large button on the ceiling and twist the soft top handle counterclockwise. Pull the soft top down and toward the windshield frame and twist the handle clockwise to lock it in.

Rear View Mirror
1. Use a slotted screwdriver to unsnap the plastic tabs on the plastic cover of the mirror.
2. Rotate the mirror to the left to remove it from the mounting bracket.
3. Plug the electrical wiring connector from the mounting bracket into the rear of the mirror. The electrical wiring connector is already attached to the mirror.
4. Place the mirror back onto the mounting bracket and rotate it to the right to secure it.
5. Snap the plastic cover back onto the mirror.
Side View Mirror
6. Open the door and use a slotted screwdriver to pry off the mirror cover from the inside of the vehicle.
7. Remove the three 10mm bolts with a socket wrench.
8. Pull the mirror off of the M3. Plug the electrical wiring connector into the side view mirror and place it back onto the vehicle.
9. Reattach the three 10mm bolts.
10. Push the mirror cover back onto the mirror and close the door.

1. Find out if there are any recalls on BMW motorcycles. Visit websites such as Web Bikeworld and Motorcyclist Online to stay up-to-date on current recalls (see Resources below). Locate your specific model of BMW bike and click on it. Find the year the bike was made and click on it. If there are any recalls, the website lists which specific part needs work.
2. Contact your local BMW motorcycle dealer. Find the dealer nearest to you at BMW Motorcycles (see Resources below).
3. Call the dealer and confirm the recall information. Once you confirm the information, make an appointment to have your BMW motorcycle serviced.
4. Drop your motorcycle off at the dealer at the scheduled appointment time. The dealer will fix or replace the recalled part and often at no charge to you.

1. Research the car you want to lease online and find out what the MSRP is Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price). A good deal for a negotiated selling price is $500 to $700 under that number. An even better deal is $800 or $900 under it. Have that number in mind when you go to the dealership.
2. Visit the dealership and choose the car you want to lease. Ask the dealer to tell you what a two- or three-year lease would cost. Dont go above a 36-month lease; the car will be out of the warranty at that point. Tell the salesperson you dont just want to know what your monthly payments would be but what the actual negotiated selling price of the car is.
3. Dont accept the first number the salesperson gives you, especially if its not close to the number you had in mind. Theyll expect you to negotiate it down.
4. Leases use a complicated system to determine the finance percentage youll pay each month. Unlike "buying" a new car where the better your credit rating, the better your finance percentage, a lease is not as flexible. They base it on something called a money factor, which translates to a percentage. This is determined by the car company (not the dealership) and is not based on your credit rating. Banks do not typically offer financing for a new car lease so dont bother to comparison shop.
5. Ask if the dealership is running any rebate specials on leases. This could knock $500 to $1,000 off the price. If you graduated college recently, they may have a special rebate for that too.
6. You will be given the option of having 12,000 or 15,000 miles a year allowed for your mileage and the price difference will be between $50 to $100 per year. While its tempting to go for the extra mileage, keep in mind that many car makers will forego the extra mileage at lease turn-in. So, although they tell you that every mile above the limit will cost up to 35 cents per mile, they may forgive that number if you lease another vehicle from them.
7. Dont let the salesperson talk you into choosing a car that has more options than you want. For example, the only difference between two identical cars may be that one has car mats for $175. Since theyre worked into the cars price, youre paying a small monthly percentage for leasing those mats. You can buy car mats from a store for a fraction of the price instead.
8. Before leaving the dealership, make sure you know the MSRP, the negotiated lease price, the length of the lease, mileage allowance and what the bottom-line monthly payments will be. Ask the salesperson about the acquisition fee. This is a non-negotiable fixed price set by the car maker that is attached to every lease deal.
9. Go to the lease calculator online (see Resources below) and plug in the numbers to see if you come up with the same figure as the dealership. If the numbers match and you are satisfied with that price, make a deal with them. If not, call your salesperson and see if you can negotiate the discrepancy.

1. Locate and open the fuse panel cover. This can be found in the drivers side dashboard. Pull down on it from the top with your fingers.
2. Find the large port within the fuse panel. It will be the same size and shape as the connective end of the BMW OBD reset tool. This small computerized hand-held device can be purchased from your BMW dealer.
3. Plug the tool into the port.
4. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the On position. Dont start the engine.
5. Wait for the tool to automatically clear all the trouble codes. Unplug the tool and close the fuse panel cover. Start the engine and verify that all service and warning lights of the instrument panel have shut off. The computer has been reset.

1. Position the left engine guard in place to determine what existing bolts need to be removed. Once they are determined, remove them.
2. Place engine guard back in location and replace the bolts.
3. Mount any additional hardware that may came with your specific models crashbars. Once the guard is mounted, tighten all bolts securely. Repeat process on the right side. Once complete, you will have successfully mounted engine crashbars on your BMW and will no longer damage the engine during a minor fall.

On most vehicles, the date of manufacture is found on a sticker attached to the car frame and is visible when the drivers side door is open.
2. Open the door, and look for stickers on the car frame near the door latch post (U-shaped bolt). There probably will be more than one.

1. Look closely underneath the passenger side of the dash to find the lower dash panel. The lower dash panel is attached by two screws and two clips.
2. Remove the two Phillips screws from the top portion of the lower dash panel. Lower the panel and release the clips on the bottom.
3. Examine the cabin air filter panel to find the sliding clips. Pull the front clip up and push the rear clip down. Due to the Crossfires unique dash setup, the cabin air filter is mounted vertically.
4. Remove the panel and set it aside. Pull out the old cabin air filter and discard it. Clear any debris from the cabin air filter housing and insert the new filter.
5. Attach the cabin air filter cover and secure the clips. Replace the lower dash panel, secure the clips and tighten the Phillips screws.

1. Pull the release handle under the dashboard on the drivers side of the Audi. Move to the front of the car and lift the hood. Turn the bolt on the negative battery cables clamp two full rotations with the 10mm wrench. Lift the cable from the battery and move it to the side. Return to the A4s cabin.
2. Insert the four stereo removal keys into the slots near the corners of the stereo deck. The keys are available through Audi or Volkswagen dealers, as well as through aftermarket car audio outlets.
3. Place two fingers from each hand inside the rings at the ends of the keys. Pull out on the tools to engage the release mechanisms on the sides of the stock radio while pulling the unit from the dashboard.
4. Pull the stereo wiring connectors by the plastic wire binders until they disconnect from the outlets on the back of the Audis head unit. Remove the antenna cable lead from the outlet on the factory radios rear panel.
5. Slide the installation cage into the A4s stereo mounting dock. Push the metal sleeve into the dashboard until the front edge is level with the face of the dashboard. Fold the metal tabs at the corners of the cage with the flat screwdriver to secure it into the dock.
6. Gather the stereo wiring and antenna cables from inside the stereo dock. Pull the cables to the front of the installation cage. Plug the stereo wiring leads into the wiring harness adapter. See the adapters manual for correct connection locations.
7. Connect the wiring harness adapter lead connectors to the outlets on the rear panel of the aftermarket stereo deck. The wiring harness leads can only connect to the stereo unit one way. Insert the antenna cable lead into the stereos antenna input.
8. Push the stereo unit into the installation cage until it locks into place within the Audis stereo dock. Return to the engine compartment.
9. Replace the negative battery cable clamp onto the A4s negative battery terminal. Tighten the bolt at the end of the clamp with the wrench and close the Audis hood.

1. Locate the diagnostic link connector (DLC) for the BMW E39. It is located under the drivers side dashboard near the steering wheel post.
2. Plug the OBD II code reader into the DLC.
3. Turn the ignition key to the key on/engine off position. This is two clicks forward in the ignition that empowers the electrical components but does not activate the engine.
4. Read the menu board of the code reader. Use the scroll buttons on the face of the code reader to maneuver through the menu options. Choose the Read Codes selection and press the Enter button. This option will take a minute to send the command the computer of the engine. Once it has communicated and discovered the status of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC), it will display the universal code with a brief description on the screen of the code reader.
5. Compare the information of the code to determine the oxygen sensor or sensors that have failed to the code guide (supplied with the code reader). The brief description on the menu of the code reader (depending on the individual code reader) may even indicate which sensor has failed or detected a problem.

1. Decide on the style of BMW you would like. They offer sedans, SUVs, sports wagons and coupes. If you arent familiar with all the options BMW has to offer, visit their website to check out all the models available and the features they include.
2. Make a list of the features and options that are the most important to you. If you have a lot of custom features you would like to have, consider custom-ordering your BMW and having it delivered to a dealer near you. This option is available both on the website and at a BMW dealer.
3. Choose the top three models you are interested in and do more research. The BMW 650 series is rated negatively as having a rough ride, jerky transmission and throttle problems. The BMW X5 is rated as one of the most luxurious SUVs and has a V8 under the hood that is popular with many car owners. These are important things to know about each of the models.
4. Consider the warranties offered by BMW. The manufacturer offers a 12-year warranty for the bodywork, three years for the paint and an entire automobile warranty that covers original BMW parts and accessories for 2 years regardless of mileage, but not including replacement of worn parts.

1. Determine where the majority of your driving will be done. If you drive in winter and cold weather climates, consider the sport option on the X5 which includes heated seats, headlight wipers and frost and fog-free headlamps.
2. Customize the X5 by getting the third bench seat option. This gives the X5 additional seating in the back storage hatch area; this is a solid custom option for larger families.
3. Add additional fog lamps or headlights to the front grill should you live where heavy fogs or snow is present. These lights also shed extra light should you live in an area with deer, moose or other wildlife that may be in the road during night-time hours.
4. Consult the Thule or Yakima rack options for the X5. Get a rack designed to transport anything from bicycles to kayaks, surfboards or skis to round out the X5 custom options.
